staring at the sun pt. 4

ph. Jacob Lillis

Sandy Vu (Dum Dum Girls & SISU)

In the summer in LA, we eat popsicles and hang eternally loose at BBQs or manmade lakes. Echo Park Lake just opened again, so I am particularly looking forward to the parade of bare bellies and men in tank tops. The smog blanket gets even thicker and makes an especially psychedelic sunset behind those transplanted palm trees. That is my favorite.

Felt - Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow

The Zombies - Walking In The Sun

Dawn Penn - It Must Be Him

SISU's dreamy video for "Two Thousand Hands" has made it's debut today on SPIN! Some serious sultriness going on here. I adore the song and video and can't wait until their full length is released. It's going to be amazing, y'all!

staring at the sun pt. 1

It's finally June and summer is almost "officially" approaching. I thought it would be fun to ask some of my favorite people/musicians/artists/etc what songs get them ready for summer and some other fun questions. Hopefully, every week or bi-weekly I'll be posting a new featured person/contributor.

It's time to pull out those cut offs/never nudes and bust out those rollerblades. Summer is here and the heat doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon!

xx
P

Orange Juice "Rip it Up"
This tune has been a favorite for years. It makes my foot tap and my head bob gleefully everytime I hear it. Go Edwyn.

Holllie Cook "Walking in the Sand"
What can I say? The girl is a star. Not many folks can take a classic and, dare I say, make it even better than the original. This is a summer tune if I every hear one.

Grudge/ Laurice "When Christine Comes Around"
Granted a bit hostile in lyrics, this (otherwise) carefree song is just poppy enough to make me want to crack open a beer and watch X-Treme fighting (just kidding.)

Make sure to check out Lu Void and like their facebook page, duh!

January 29, 2013

I've been slacking on the "blogging" lately.

Sorry, I've been busy trying to figure out the mess that is my life right now. Currently testing how much one person can really do and how many places to can they be at once...I tried duplicating myself and it totally didn't work, bummer.

(Thanks Multiplicity for lying to me as a child!)

Anyways, I do have a couple of exciting things coming up that I can't wait to share with everyone soon. Until then, you can see one of my photos made it to Dum Dum Girls wikipedia page.

And I think it's time for a mini resurrection of 'my life in mobile photos' or maybe I'll rename it 'Patrice's So-Called Life'.

the past couple of weeks have consisted of the following:

meeting one of my best friend's girlfriend, Maddie, she is lovely

we got angsty together

I've been taking photos with my real camera and doing a LITTLE less instagramming than I normally do.

lounged around with Tori, watched Girls and compared it to our lives.

aww, look cute cat!

more angst

Chilling with Atticus

read a lot of books, learned some new words

found a crazy old photo of Caitlin, Dev and myself (2008, NYC)
Super LOLZZZ, our faces...also, Dev and I have similar glasses, it's cool to be slightly blind.
found a photo from last year of Chloe and I letting loose at a FOALS show in St. Louis. we were the only people dancing because some crowds are lameeee.
I mean how can you not get down to this oldie but goodie?
it'll cause some spastic, hair whipping dancing.

I am currently reading this

and I've been listening to a lot of Fugazi lately.

January 9, 2013

it's a dead end road, for you and me

I just fucking shit my fucking pants! WHAT THE FUCK have I been doing and WHERE THE HELL have I been, that I haven't been keeping up with my dudes! Well anyways, now that my head is finally out of my ass and I'm not the total fucking dickhead I've been all winter.

*(I mean can someone say "Psychotic Patrice" for the months of October - December?)

ANYWAYS!!! More on that later.

*back to FOALS*

FOALS are going hard and getting heavy. And I am obsessing over their new(ish) song "Inhaler" and can't wait until their third album 'Holy Fire' which comes out on the 12th of Feburary! Also, I am really into the video. I feel like I need to be in an alternate state of mind the next time I watch it.

(Yannis *if you are reading this*, I am coming for that sweatshirt/jacket or someone link it to me so I can buy it and rock it all day, erryday.)

"I'm rusted gold
I stripped my soul
I make believe
and i'm not for rent
my head is spent
I guarantee"

grew up at midnight pt. 5

(ph. Malia James)

Your current location:

los angeles.

Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
the amazing friends I am staying with are throwing a big party.
What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
I tend to listen to pretty chilled out music before going out. I love throwing something like "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" on the record player.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure song of 2012?
I don't really get guilty about music, i feel guilty enough about other things. But i do get that "somebody that i used to know" song stuck in my head and it drove me nuts. And in 2012 I really got into Niki and the Dove "the fox" and "mother protect" which I played often and on repeat which probably drove the neighbours crazy.

What are your going out essentials?
good friends, perfume (tom ford), a camera of some sort, the number of a local cab company and sunglasses incase it is light when I head home.

(ph. Malia James)
What is the one song that always gets you on the dancefloor?
Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run
What would you spin if you were the dj?
I'd probably ask  Dan Mancini to dj "with me" and then  just enjoy what he was playing.
What drink will you be holding throughout the night?
Champagne

Who do you wish you could kiss at midnight (celebrity or non)?
Two people come immediately to mind, one is personal and the other is Eddie Vedder... ( teenage crushes never go away) He is about two feet shorter than me, but as i said to Malia a while back... he's short in stature but tall in talent.

What do you do after the party (go to another location, go home and crash)?
In London I'd end up out all night rampaging from one late night disaster to another or probably end up trying to sleep in the lobby of The Groucho Club. Here (thankfully) i'll just have to slink off to my room.

Your hangover cure?
sadly only time heals. :(
What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
that's a big secret.

Malia

Your current location:
LOLs Angeles

Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
Two of my favorite people are taking me to an intimate party at a stranger's house.
What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
Tonight, I'm listening to David Bowie's Changes
What is your biggest guilty pleasure song of 2012?
I feel no guilt over the music I listen to.

What are your going out essentials
My phone.... so I can Instagram.
What is the one song that always gets you on the dancefloor?
Love Man by Otis Redding
What would you spin if you were the dj?
I'm best suited to DJ a pajama party or maybe an orgy. I like playing slow sexy songs like "The Singer" by Nick Cave.
What drink will you be holding throughout the night?
I do love a glass of champagne.
Who do you wish you could kiss at midnight (celebrity or non)?
Samuel Preston..... or Bob Dylan in 1966

This will be an early one for me. I'm in prep to shoot a music video next week.
Your hangover cure?
Not getting wasted.

What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
Romance, shooting a lot, and touring the world with Dum Dum Girls.

Dee Dee

Your current location:
 my Upper East Side apartment
Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
I'm not sure yet; champagne at home and then either Motor City or Heather's as friends are djing both spots.

What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
It really depends on the situation. I expect Siouxsie and the Banshees tonight.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure song of 2012?
I don't think in terms of guilty pleasures anymore; just whether I like it.

What are your going out essentials?
Heels and eyeliner.
What is the one song that always gets you on the dancefloor?
Anything by Biggie or Slade.

What would you spin if you were the dj?
All sorts. I got hired to DJ at Mister H at The Mondrian recently and was fired only ten minutes into my set.  Management hadn't told the night's promoter I had to play top 40 in consideration of the hotel guests so my Lush, Cocteau Twins, and Rowland S Howard selections did not go over well.
What drink will you be holding throughout the night?
Champagne then lemon water.

Who do you wish you could kiss at midnight (celebrity or non)?
My mom.

What do you do after the party (go to another location, go home and crash)?
It takes a lot to entice me to go anywhere but home.
Your hangover cure?
Marijuana and coffee.

What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
Ch ch ch changes

Myself

your current location:
somewhere in the Midwest.
Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
Originally Nashville, but thanks to mother nature blessing us with snow and ice, I’ll now be at home watching the Twilight Zone marathon and reading generic mass text messages at midnight and not gonna lie, I might be in a onesie...
What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
"Darling Nikki" - Prince, "Edge of Seventeen"- Stevie Nicks, anything No Doubt.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure song of 2012?
“Boyfriend” – Justin Bieber, “I Knew You Were Trouble” – Taylor Swift, I don’t feel guilty about it either.
What are your going out essentials?
Camera(s), iPhone (gots to be instagrammin’), iPhone charger (all that instagrammin' drains your battery) red or berry lip stain, practical shoes to dance in.
What is the one song that always gets you on the dancefloor?
"Dancing On My Own" - Robyn
"The Bay" - Metronomy

What would you spin if you were the dj?
My tastes are all over the place, so my set would be a hot mess of 90s baby making jamzzz, Three 6 Mafia, Prince, Tears For Fears, New Order, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, The Smiths, Crystal Waters (well, 90s dance in general), and WHAM would somehow get in there...the list could go on forever.
What drink will you be holding throughout the night?
Gin & Tonic then Champagne then water

Who do you wish you could kiss at midnight (celebrity or non)?
Oh there is someone…but I’ll settle for any of the following: Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gaspard Ulliel. Then there is my puppy, Atticus!
What do you do after the party (go to another location, go home and crash)?
Definitely home, shower and crash. Shower depends on the level of intoxication and/or pure laziness…
Your hangover cure?
Water and advil before bed and in the morning, toast, lots of coffee, some more advil and some more water

What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
World domination

January 2, 2013

grew up at midnight pt. 4

Yes, I am still posting away. I feel I am doing better than the last time. Last time I did this, I was still posting until the middle of the month. I blame the fact my body really loves sleep at the moment after an insane holiday season.

Recently someone asked me why I didn't include the question "What is your New Year resolution?", I didn't include that question because:

1. I don't believe in them
2. Everyone usually says the same thing (eat healthier, go to the gym more, quit smoking, blah blah blah blah blah)
3. Resolutions should be personal and for that person to know and a select others

Also, remember to click the hyperlink on the name's to see their amazing work!

Your current location:
Now at my folks' house in Houston, (usually, London, UK)

Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
I will be bar hopping with the hubby and parents I believe around downtown Houston. But we're going to start off with a dinner of hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
Can't say I have any go-to songs of the moment, generally any album I'm obsessed with currently. But I might suggest a mind-numbing video of Gandalf doing the euro pop nod.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure song of 2012?
Guilty pleasure song of 2012, would it be bad to say I never really feel like I have guilty pleasures? I take after my parents in being hard to embarrass. The only time I feel a little awkward is when I try sneaking in a new song I enjoy several times throughout the work day. I'm the office dj.

What is the one song that always gets you on the dancefloor?
Pop songs from 2006, and many hip hop songs of the 90s get me on the dance floor.

What would you spin if you were the dj?
I jump all over the place with my music, so anything from ethiopian jazz to 60s women to dad rock, maybe some contemporaries as well...

What drink will you be holding throughout the night?
'm going to play it by ear on the drinks tonight. Champagne and wine are a guarantee with my parents in toe, but my dad loves his whiskey and hoppy beer, so I can go anywhere.

Who do you wish you could kiss at midnight (celebrity or non)?
I plan on kissing my bunny hubby tonight... wishes though, best kept a secret (ha).
What do you do after the party (go to another location, go home and crash)?
think I've become the granny of any group, so I'll probably want to crash in from of the tv.

Your hangover cure?
I’m a big fan of sticky rice and soy sauce, mac n cheese, matzoh ball soup. It depends on what city or part of the world I'm living in and what I have easy access to.
What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
I'm looking forward to earning more, saving more, and spending some in the new year.

What drink will you be holding throughout the night?

Bed, wait am I supposed to be fun in this interview? Bed.

Your hangover cure?
Sleep, sleep, sleep, more sleep.

What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
Love and Magic.

Where/how will you be spending NYE (bar, club, friends house, etc)?
Probably something a bit low key, going to a friends house or small party.

What is the one song that really gets you ready to go out?
probably not what the cab driver is playing in route between my office / studio and the party...
